Argh! Today took a turn for the wintery worst again, and we had SLEET and SNOW! Yuk! I thought we had seen the back of that! Anyway, I still felt like I needed to go out and run, so me and my running buddy Jo went out for a 40 minute uphill fatburner - and got pelted with sleet. Not pleasant! My face is still red from the windburn! Roll on 'real' spring...

Stinky Rant

Ugh! Today I had two smelly train trips! On the way into Manchester I had the misfortune to sit next to a young man who had bad BO, and had taken a bath in aftershave to 'mask ' it (it didnt work!). Then, on the way back later on, on a packed commuter train, a very drunk girl came and stood right next to me who smelt (politely) of stale urine. She then started to lean on me as the train moved - so I got up and moved as it was making me feel sick! WHY DO PEOPLE NOT USE SOAP???

Trafalgar Day Embroidery!

A few weeks ago, I was asked to make an embroidery for the Bolton Trafalgar Day Society, for when they went on a historical trip to Gibraltar. Trafalgar Day is held on October 21st, and marks the victory of the Royal Navy, lead by Admiral Nelson on the Battle of Trafalgar. The trip to Gibraltar was to visit sights and war graves associated with the battle, and the society were featured on the front page of the Gibraltar Gazette last week - wearing my polo shirts!
Here is the embroidery.....
And here are the men in their polo shirts...
Thats my dad by the way, on the far right in the cap :) x

Daylight Saving and New Tattoo Heart Brooches

Today was the first day of Daylight saving in the UK. It was actually a lovely bright day, and first thing I went for a long overdue run with Michael round the fields near my house. My fitness levels have slipped a bit recently, but im really keen to get it back on track now spring has arrived properly. Saying that, just seen the forecast for snow again this week - ugh! - though we had seen the last of that!

This afternoon I had an idea for some new creations to add to my range, inspired by the popularity of my 3D tattoo heart necklaces.
I made some padded felt tattoo heart brooches using my embroidery and sewing machines. I'm rather pleased with the outcome and will be keeping one of the 'Love' ones myself for my black and white polka mac. Here they are....

Pound Shop Treasure!

Today I went into Manchester for the monthly 'Made in Manchester' creative group meeting, held at the lovely Cafe Aromat in the Manchester craft and design centre.
After a great meeting - we had near full attendance, which is rare as we are all really busy! - I went to the pound shop on my way back to the car to stock up on Jiffy bags and tape.
While in Poundland, I also found some unexpected bargains......

3 drawer storage unit for crafting materials - £1!! These are £9.99 in Hobbycraft (rip off merchants!)

Red and white polka brolly - £1!
Bendy rollers to try some retro style hair curling - £1!
All pink of course....and spotty!

Holiday daydreams...

Today was a bit cold and wet, so I had a look at the Screamin' Festival website to cheer myself up! This is where Michael and I are going as part of our summer holiday and I cant wait! Lots of cool bands, retro shopping, beach parties and lovely weather (hopefully!) to look forward to.
After going to 2 rockabilly festivals last year (Tutti Frutti and Rhythm Riot) I am hooked!
9 weeks to go and counting....

New cards...

Today I did lots of different things - a trip to Hobbycraft (hate it - so expensive but I got a voucher for my birthday!), followed by making orders, customs, doing an embroidered scarf for someone who is in a band and also designing some new cards to sell at the shows that I have coming up in April.

I don't often make cards so much anymore - but I decided to do some alternative themed ones in keeping with my jewellery that are just that bit different as they are always good add on sales. Here are a few new ones I did today...

Anodised Aluminium

Today I went to my friend Charlotte's house to learn how to anodise aluminium.
Charlotte runs Silvermousey jewellery and uses this technique to create some really stunning effects for her jewellery.
I had a play around with some of my patterns using different colours, and this is what I came up with ....

Two tone violet bracelet with silver stars and red swallows

Some blue toned/silver swallows and stars, which I cut out into circles to make into earrings. These are unfinished so look a little rough round the edges at the moment...

Panels of two tone swallow and stars to make into pendants...or whatever else I can think of!
I had a really fun day - its always great to learn how to expand your creativity!

Birthday, Bargains and Seaside!

It's my 32nd birthday today! To celebrate, I went to Southport (Seaside town on the North West coast of England) with my partner, Michael. Southport is lovely, and only 40 mins on a direct train from where we live. We had some nice lunch, had a walk out on the pier, and visited a photography exhibition in the beautiful Wayfarers Arcade.

There is an amazing bookshop in the arcade, that sells period books and magazines. I fell in love with some 1950's home improvement magazines (the adverts were brilliant!) but at £5 each, I decided not to get them and save my money for charity shopping - our main reason for going to Southport! On Lord Street (the main street, has lovely wrought iron canopy over the street) there are about 12 charity shops, so had a great afternoon rooting through. I found a lovely star print prom style dress, western style lumberjack checked Topshop shirt and a fabulous 1960's travel case for jewellery in mint condidtion.

When we got home, I made some chocolate cupcakes (cant have your birthday with no cake!), yum.
One of my fave presents I got today was off Michael, and was the Print and Pattern book, by Bowie Style - author of one of my all time fave blogs, Print & Pattern. It's such a good designers resourse and has some really great inspirational work in it.

Oh, and couldn't have a trip to Southport without marvelling at one of the super Kitsch rock shops on the front...

Why I love the North!

Although I really enjoyed my trip to London at the weekend, its always nice to come home and I dont think I could live anywhere but the North West! One of the best bits being the bargain drink prices as opposed to the v. expensive London rip off prices! Im certainly not a big drinker at all, but I object to overpriced watered down drinks at extortionate prices!
Tonight I went out for an Italian with my other half and some friends. After a 3 course delicious garlic laced feast, we went to out local Weatherspoons where I indulged in a Sailor Jerry and Coke for £1.49, hurrah!

Back from London...

Just got back from my weekend jaunt to London. Had a fab time but a bit of a lack of sleep so feeling knackered today!

Yesterday day, we went to see the Hopped Up exhibition at Proud Gallery in Camden - photography from European hot rod show by David Biene, which was really cool.

We then went on to Bloomsbury Bowling for the Rock and Bowl 50s night. It was fun, and the band who played - The Surfin Gorillas were cool and did some rockin surf classics. We didnt stay out all that late as I was up early this morning to get my train home. It also costs a small fortune for a drink in London too - Im used to Sailor Jerry and coke for £1.49 in my local Weatherspoons!! Here are a few pics from the night...

Flyer from the night

The Surfin Gorillas

Beth, Kate and Helen on the dancefloor

I went for Hawaiian themed get up - Levi 501s turn ups (the mega bargain from the Charity shop haul on Monday!), Vintage Hawaiian shirt - £1.79 from Ebay, and triple purple hibiscus clip from Be Bop Baby Barettes.

The Peacocks!

Oops! My vow to blog every day only lasted a week, but I do have good reason for not blogging yesterday - I came down to London to visit my friend Kate, and we went to see The Peacocks at the Underworld in Camden. The Peacocks are Swiss and create punky rockabilly which is nothing short of awesome! We had a great night and they rocked. Here are a couple of pics....

Tonight we are off to Rock and Bowl at Bloomsbury Bowling - a 50's themed night at a bowling alley. Pics to follow tomorrow!

Mmmm Patatas Bravas

Today was busy, had orders to finish and photos to take for a new wholesale stockist. At 5pm, I left to go to my friend Jo's house, before heading off to the Trafford Centre (huge shopping centre on the outskirts of Manchester) for something to eat and to get Jo a dress for a function she is going to.
We headed to La Tasca (Spanish restaurant) and I had a 50% off voucher for all tapas, so we ordered a feast to share! My fave is always the Patatas Bravas. Delicious!

Charity Shop bargains galore!

Today was a work at home day, and when the weather is good, as it was today, I always try and go out for a walk to get some fresh air.
I luckily live only 5 mins away from a fabulous charity shop on my local high street which I try and visit once a week to see what they have. Sometimes I get nothing, and other days (like today!) I got lots! - This was my haul...Marks & Spencer denim zip up front dress. £2. Looks fab with a black and white stripy top underneath and a red waist belt and shoes.

Stripy Pussy Bow blouse with anchor embroidery, £1.20

Levi 501's turn ups, £1.50 - perfect for summer!

A 60's hand towel with groovy retro pattern, 20p

A 'teach yourself spanish' book, 20p. BARGAIN! We are going to spain for our hols this year and I thought Id brush up on my basics so I can say a few things and read menus!
More on the exciting Spain holiday to come in future posts.....

Train reading

So today I went into do one of my days at the Menswear Wholesaler I freelance for in Manchester.

The journey takes about 35 mins, and the train (on the way there) is ALWAYS late - grr!

Anyway.....I like trains because you get some good uninterupted reading time, and my latest read is this: The Tent, The Bucket and Me by Emma Kennedy

I saw it in Waterstones the other week while looking at some travel books, and it looked really funny - but was £10.99. For a paperback. Im an eternal bargain hunter so I jotted down the title and author and bought a second hand copy off ebay that night for £3.00 delivered. Its all about 70s family camping holidays. Everyone who has ever been on a camping/caravan holiday as a kid should read it as its very funny and has lots of "oh yeah! We did that too" moments. Genius!

Retro buys!

Today we went to Southport to pick up the original 1960s egg chair that my partner, Michael won on ebay last week for the bargin price of £34.03!
I was a bit worried it would not fit in the car, but it did and here it is in our bay window. Its in mint condition and we are so happy with it!

On the way home, we spotted a car boot sale in Burscough, so popped in and found these fabulous retro bargain glasses (we collect 50s & 60s glasses) for only 10p each! Just a shame there was only one of each, boo.

This is my fave. An original 50s glass in mint condition with fab atomic style print in white and turquoise. Probably the best 10p I have ever spent!

Original 60s glass. Cool pop orange and red flowers with white leaf print.

And on our way back to the car we spotted this nice bright planter - which is now outside our front door.

FUSE Craft fair

Today I did the FUSE craft fair in Bolton. Its just in a little church hall near my parents house, and its part of the craft group that im part of who organise it. The Bolton Air Cadets joined us and were fantastic at providing endless cups of coffee and helping us all carry our stuff to and from the hall. I also got some fab new things and comissioned an amazing skirt! Here are some photos from the day...

Me sporting all my own designs - well, you have to as sales lady, right?!

My pitch - I got a good spot right near the door :)

I swapped this very cool reversable headband from fellow crafter Jen for a moustache necklace! I love the skull bandana fabric and the day of the day fabris so much, I have comissioned her to make me a reversable circle skirt - yippee!

Hand knitted cupcake brooch attached to birthday card - made by fellow crafter Deb - so cute!
A cactus in a handmade pot, made by fellow crafter Norma
Some home made Stem Ginger cookies that I made to donate to the cafe - they all sold out! (boo!) ha ha
A selection of the scrummy cakes on offer in the cafe. I had a square of lemon drizzle, yum.
Considering it was only a little local fair, I did well so am really pleased - hurrah :)
